Floyd's Opinion
I am ConfusedThe following was written on December 16, 1999 in response to an article in the Times-Dispatch.
Richmond Times-Dispatch Dear Sir, I trust this letter finds you prepared to enjoy a wonderful holiday season. I must temper that joy however by commenting on a sad topic. Today’s Richmond Times-Dispatch carried the story of the woman in Dinwiddie County who is charged with manslaughter for killing her newborn baby, "Woman charged in death of baby". This story brings to the fore another example of the intellectual dishonesty that our culture has produced. Each day we are confronted through the news media, and other sources, with the question, "What has happened to our culture?" Also asked is, "Why are our kids killing each other?" We debate these questions and their causes ad naseum, but with no definitive answer. I would posit the notion that the answer is easily discernible, but there are many who do not wish to hear it, as it conflicts with their world view. Let us look at this particular case as an example. A woman (who is free to choose what she does with her body and it’s contents) decides to have her baby in a toilet and leave it there. As a result the baby dies and the woman is charged with a crime. Had this same woman gone to a doctor, diploma hanging on the wall, and allowed him to suck the baby’s brain out (killing it), this would be perfectly acceptable by the same law-enforcement which now seeks to prosecute this woman. And further many in our society would see this as a perfectly acceptable option. WHY!? Among those who hear of and read about this duplicity are our young people. Minds in their formative years which are thus unable to determine why there should be any respect for life, either newborn or older. After all, our society at large has allowed this killing to take place and has explained it away as simply being a woman’s RIGHT TO CHOOSE! You will understand if I and others are confused. Beam me up, Scotty! Sincerely, Floyd C. Bayne
