Floyd's Opinion
Confederate HeritageThe parts in brackets were those edited out by the newspaper.
Richmond Times-Dispatch Dear Sir, {I trust this letter finds you well. I write regarding two recent news articles involving race relations.} {The first is the} Regarding the brouhaha over Governor Allen naming April Confederate History and Heritage month: It saddens me that in this age of information technology so many people are still so woefully ignorant about their own country’s history. {But that ground has already been covered. I write now to state in this public forum that} I am offended by and wish to see an end to Black History Month in our public schools. Since it is trendy nowadays to cease anything that a vocal minority deems offensive, I will be starting my own drive to end any and all topics, celebrations, discussions, or public displays of anything I find offensive. I cannot see why we celebrate the history of a people, Africans, who still {to this day} hold their own people in the bondage of slavery. Why do we celebrate this history of a people who {to this very day(just watch the news)} still kill each other over nothing more than tribal warfare? Why do we celebrate a heritage that still tolerates oppressive government throughout the continent of Africa as long as that government is run by other black men? {GET THE POINT YET!?} Yes, the history of the United States has it’s blemishes; all countries do. We also have a great deal to be proud of. We have abolished slavery here while it continues in Africa - blacks owning other blacks. Where is the hue and cry from those in this country who claim we are a racist society!? I do not begrudge the black man his right to celebrate and be proud of his heritage {however offensive I may find it}. I ask that he simply extend to me {and mine} the same courtesy. {I submit that} It is the malcontents of the NAACP and others of their ilk who continue to create divisiveness and hatred, not Governor Allen or those who simply wish to celebrate their heritage. {lastly, regarding the April 12 article by M.P. Williams about reparations to the black community in America; As an American of Scottish ancestry (Scottish-American) I hereby demand on behalf of my people reparations from the British government for the atrocities visited upon my people by the English so many years ago. Scotsmen of the world unite and demand that which is rightfully yours. If it’s good enough for the Jews and the Japanese then by God it’s good enough for the Scottish. I will await a reply from the British government’s representatives here in the U.S. Sincerely, Floyd C. Bayne
