This letter was written in response to letter to the editor from Edna Denby of Richmond. In her letter Ms. Denby asks us to stop picking on Clinton. My letter was not printed.

Dear Sir,

I am compelled to respond to the whining diatribe of Ms. Edna Denby, Editorial page - March 20, 1994, Enough About Whitewater; It’s time to support Clinton.

I do not know Ms. Denby, but I must respond to the image that she creates of herself, and those who would agree with her complaint. I have a mental image of another spoiled American with her hand out waiting for Big Brother government to put something in it. I wonder if Ms. Denby and her ilk were as anxious to have the press leave Presidents Reagan and Bush alone? Or how about the daily grief that was heaped upon Vice-President Quayle? My bet would be that she was not.

If the Whitewater affair shows us anything it is that we have a President, and first woman (I do not believe she is a lady), who are at best hypocrites and at worst outright thieves. Would Ms. Denby be as tolerant of a liar in her family? Her father, brother, husband, etc.? And if not then why would she be more tolerant of a president who is a liar? Mr. Clinton and his cronies came riding into Washington, D.C. on the white horse of morality and virtue. They lambasted those administrations of the last twelve years as pandering to the greedy corporations and other Americans who dared to try to seek a better life for themselves. And yet it would seem that the Clinton’s, with the Mrs. doing the bulk of the work, were doing exactly the same thing, and somewhat successfully.

It was Teddy Roosevelt who said (I am paraphrasing), It is not unpatriotic to question the ability or honesty of our President. In fact it would be more unpatriotic to take Ms. Denby’s approach and just leave him alone because she is tired of hearing about it. I’ll tell you what is tiring to hear about. Tonya Harding and her band of misfits was, and still is, daily fare for those who need to get a life. The reason why this sort of reporting is fruitless is because the Harding case has no bearing on the effect of government on my pocketbook. However, the policies put forth by a less than honest administration in Washington, D.C. have a profound effect. That alone makes the Whitewater investigation important. We have a right to know if the man sitting in the oval office can be trusted. DO YOU TRUST HIM MS. DENBY!?

If you want to help your country how about voting for someone who believes in and promotes the idea of less government, lower taxes, less regulation in the business place. I could go on! No, instead we are expected to stand quietly by so that Mr. Clinton can GIVE something to those with their hands out. Those who think that this country OWES them something.

You wish for those of us who question the President’s integrity to just leave him alone. To be of some help to him and the country. I submit that it is those like Ms. Denby who expect to have things given to them by the government that are hindering the greatness and future promise of this once proud country. Other countries have already lost any respect for our President that they may have once had. And I promise you it had nothing to do with Whitewater.

I am sure that I, and my friends, will remain on Ms. Denby’s list of those who are hindering our President, so be it. I would rather make my voice heard in support of the Constitution and the rights of the citizenry than in support of a hypocritical liar. I can only call ‘em like I see ‘em.
