Floyd's Opinion
Iraq? Yes!Submitted, but not printed. April 22, 2003 Richmond Times-DispatchP.O. Box 85333 Richmond, VA 23293 Attn: Editor of the Editorial Page Dear Sir, I trust all is well at the offices of the Times-Dispatch. I am writing to offer commentary on the recent events in Iraq. We have heard the hollering and complaining from the usual suspects that war accomplishes nothing positive. We heard how we shouldn’t be in Iraq, how our actions would enflame the anger of North Korea, how we would suffer more and greater terrorist attacks here at home, yada, yada, yada. While our national terror alert remains high have there been more of the anticipated attacks? Is North Korea still threatening to send missiles our way, or instead are they moving back to the negotiation table? We have ended the tyranny of Saddam and freed a people. Are there any among the whiners on the left who wish we had not done this? Would they like to see the political prisoners of Iraq returned to their prison cells? Including the children? As for the future of Iraq I personally care not whether they return to a tyrannical despot or an American form of democracy. It is worth remembering that our primary goal in going to Iraq was to eliminate the first of many terrorist threats to the U.S. The freeing of the populace was a benefit, but not the real reason we went there. Whatever form of government the Iraqi people choose for themselves is fine with me as long as it does not promote terrorism against the U.S. or it’s interests. If it does then we will just have to return and show our resolve yet again. The point to all of this is that the proper use of our nation’s force has indeed had positive effects throughout the political world. Knowing that we now have leadership in the U.S. that means what it says and will do as it says, many are now rethinking their evil rhetoric and actions against our nation. Perhaps they really aren’t as anxious to “die for their cause” as they would have us believe. Sincerely, Floyd C. Bayne
