General Assembly 2003With a new general assembly session comes some new problems and some of the old ones. January 7, 2003
The Richmond Times-Dispatch Dear Sir, I trust this letter finds you well and having enjoyed a wonderful holiday season. With the new year comes new problems, and some old. I wish to address two items in the news that are to be hot topics in the coming General Assembly Session. First is the State’s attempt, by way of our Governor, to be my "nanny", yet again. Governor Warner’s desire to make the failure to wear a seatbelt a primary offense is so transparent as to be laughable - if it weren’t so onerous in its effects. Can we just call a spade a spade? It is nothing more than another attempt to create yet one more source of revenue for the State’s coffers. The police have enough to do to keep the crime rate down without spending time writing tickets, and you know they will focus much time and attention on this, for something that should remain a personal choice for all adults. I would also like to address the continued "profiling" of a law abiding segment of our society. While it is politically incorrect to profile anyone else in our society, after all we might offend someone, one group continues to be profiled simply for exercising a constitutional right. I am referring to gun-owners. Simply by daring to own, purchase, or sell a firearm I am labeled as a potential "criminal" or "murderer". Why does this form of profiling continue to be tolerated while all other forms of profiling are called attacks on our civilliberties? Senator Marsh, are you listening? Sic Semper Tyrannis Sincerely, Floyd C. Bayne
