Floyd's Opinion
Ashe BoulevardFrom: Floyd C. Bayne To: Editor of the editorial page Richmond Times-Dispatch Good day, Sir, I am writing regarding the article on the front page of today’s edition (Ashe Boulevard?). Now let me see if I understand this – in the city of Richmond crime is up, murder is up, businesses are leaving, citizens are leaving, the council looks for new and creative ways to raise taxes to drive more business away, etc., etc., etc. Now comes the recently appointed councilman, and former mayor, Walter T. Kenney, Sr. His first action as a newly appointed member of that august body - A strong approach to crime fighting? A proposal to lower taxes to encourage new businesses to move to the city? Encouraging the citizenry that remains to be more responsible for their actions within the community? Of course not, that would make too much sense. No, Mr. Kenney’s primary goal right now is to have the Boulevard renamed for Arthur Ashe (no disrespect intended toward the late Mr. Ashe). This despite his own acknowledgement that this move would cost "...Richmond, businesses, and residents lots of money." If you are among the many who wonder why Richmond continues its cultural, moral, and fiscal decline you need look no further. Stop the madness! Sincerely, Floyd C. Bayne
