Floyd's Opinion
Internal WarThis letter made it onto the editorial page in the July 19, 2002 edition. July 9, 2002
Richmond Times-Dispatch Dear Sir, Good day, Sir. I trust this correspondence finds you well. I write regarding today’s COD letter by Mr. Thomas Cannon. While I admire and respect Mr. Thomas Cannon I must, however, respectfully disagree with his assertion that, "America is indestructible!", as stated in his recent COD letter, "Enemy, Not U.S., Will Wither", July 9, 2002. I do agree with Mr. Cannon that America can and will defeat our Islamic-terrorist enemy in the war we are currently waging. But to say that America is indestructible may be a bit naive on his part. My fear, knowing what I do about history, is that our great nation will not be defeated by a foreign enemy, but will, in fact, implode. We will destroy ourselves with little or no help from any of our foreign detractors. A quick look through some history books will show how this can happen. Our Supreme Court says it’s okay to send child pornography over the Internet (first amendment), another federal court says that we cannot pledge allegiance to our country as it is unconstitutional (how?), we abort over a million babies each year, not because of any threat to the health of the mother, but for birth control (because we can’t exercise any self-discipline), our divorce rate hovers around the 50% mark, we allow a president to change the meaning of the word "is", we can’t or won’t discipline our children for fear of being charged with child abuse, TV inundates us with violence, sex, and vulgar language during all time slots, Christians are impugned and called "radicals", etc., etc., etc. I do not fear any enemy from abroad, but I readily confess that I fear for our nation because of forces at work from within. Americans have proven their ability to be easily distracted time and time again. Now, as we are engaged in a war on terror, they are again distracted from the liberties and morals that must define a free people. We shrug our shoulders as another piece is chipped away from the base of our freedoms. Polls show that far too many Americans are willing to give up some freedom for safety, assuring that we will have neither. We hear cries of tolerance and understanding for various religions and other cultures, all the while the Christians of this nation (a nation founded by Christians) are called a threat to the country. Our children are pushed to grow up faster and there is nowhere they can hide from the constant drumbeat of sex that they see on TV, hear on the radio, or see in print ads, and magazines. Yes, Mr. Cannon, we will win this war against terrorism, of that I have no doubt. I only hope that we will apply the same fervor and determination to rooting out the subversive elements of our own society before THAT war is lost. Sincerely, Floyd C. Bayne
