More On "Loopholes"This was sent to the Times-Dispatch in response to another whining letter about more gun control. It was not printed. December 7, 2002 The Richmond Times-Dispatch P.O. Box 85333 Richmond, VA 23293 Attn: Editor of the Editorial Page Dear Sir, I trust this letter finds you in the holiday spirit. I am once again moved to respond to a recent letter on the editorial page. I refer to the December 7, 2002 letter titled, "Let Assembly Close Gun-Law Loopholes", by Mr. Grant Gary Jacobsen. Once again we see the vacuousness and strident emotionalism that defines the anti-gun crowd in America today. Would Mr. Jacobsen care to explain to us ignorant gun-owners how closing some perceived "loophole" is going to prevent gun violence on school property? Do criminals obey gun laws? Did "No Gun Zones" around schools keep the "Beltway Sniper" from using his Bushmaster rifle to shoot a Maryland student. If Mr. Jacobsen’s "loophole" were closed would that student have escaped the sniper’s bullet? Having been a Civil War re-enactor for over twenty years I have gone to numerous schools to perform "living history" programs. I have used my .577 caliber musket in many of these. I first had to get permission from the school administration and the local police departments. Should I have been jailed for having a gun on school property? Does my use of the "loophole" make me a threat to the safety of the school-children? Are pro-second amendment special interest groups the only one’s that politicians seek to placate? Is Sarah Brady’s bunch ignored by the politicians? I think not. In fact most of the restrictive, and I might add useless, gun laws we have now were an attempt to enact "sensible" gun-control laws to placate that group. Have those who ignore all other laws (criminals) chosen to obey only the gun laws? To paraphrase a popular Clinton campaign slogan, "It’s the criminals, Stupid!" Sincerely, Floyd C. Bayne
