Calculating Tax Cut Costs
This letter was printed in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on September 6, 2001. August 29, 2001
Richmond Times-Dispatch Dear Sir, I simply cannot contain myself when I see such stories in the news media. Front page, RT-D, August 29, 2001 - Headline, "Cost of tax cut calculated". I long for the day when we see the following headline, "Cost of tax increase on citizenry calculated". Why is the cost to me, and others who pay taxes, never calculated in the same manner as the "cost" to government!? When politicians continue to say that tax cuts will "cost the country" just who do they think the "country" is? They, of course, mean the government and their coffers. More accurately one should use taxpayer in place of country. The government does not create wealth, in fact it can only confiscate it. The working men/women of America create wealth and the money that government confiscates to pay for it’s special interests back home. Tax increases cost me plenty and I resent it. I did not create the national debt and feel no compulsion to help pay it down. I know how to live within a budget. I, and others, do it every day. Why can’t the poltroons in Washington, D.C. do the same? Instead of worrying about the tax cut why not start looking at ways to save money within the government? Like not paying $200 for a hammer, or not making grants for the study of the effects of cow flatulence on the ozone, etc., etc. Stop trying to put the onus for this madness on the working citizenry and put it squarely where it belongs - ON THE IRRESPONSIBLE POLITICIANS IN D.C. The fact is that the tax cut is not big enough or quick enough. Stop punishing achievement in this country by taking more money from the people who create the wealth. Let’s all start holding the cretins in Washington, D.C. more accountable for their use of OUR money. It’s not just a fiscal matter, it’s a moral matter. It is simply wrong for the government, at any level, to take the fruits of one’s labor and squander it as has been done over the years. Enough is enough! Sic Semper Tyrannis! Sincerely, Floyd C.
