NRA AccusedThis letter was printed in the newspaper on March 25, 2000. It was in response to a letter written by a woman from Richmond and printed in an earlier edition. March 18, 2000
Richmond Times-Dispatch Dear Sirs, I feel compelled to respond to the letter in the March 18 edition of the editorial page. The letter I specifically refer to was by a Catherine E. Robertson of Richmond and was titled, NRA Stands Accused of Accessory to Murder. There is so much about her diatribe that is wrong and overlooks common-sense that I just don’t know where to begin. No guns in private hands Ms. Robertson? Have you ever heard of the Constitution of the United States and in particular the second amendment? Oh I know, that right applies only to a State militia. All the other rights are for individuals except the second. Accessory to murder? I am a husband and a father of two beautiful children in elementary school. I am also a NRA member. Are the readers of this page now to believe, as you do, that I am in favor of children being shot at school? Perhaps if you were to get beyond your knee-jerk, emotional response and use your cognitive thinking abilities you would understand the fallacy of gun control laws. Would you, or anyone, please explain to me how guns locks, or any other gun law, would have prevented the most recent shooting death in an elementary school? Follow your claims through to their logical conclusions and then tell me how the NRA is responsible for such tragedies. I couldn’t help but notice in the letter by Ms. Robertson that she made no mention of the criminal element in our society. Once again it’s more of, Let’s persecute the law abiding and overlook the criminal. After all the criminal is a victim too, isn’t he? While Ms. Robertson called on all women to raise their voices I will call on all logical thinking Americans to hold accountable those who are truly responsible for these tragedies.
