Floyd's Opinion
Route 288 ExtensionThis letter was sent to Mr. L.H. Brett of Colonial Hts., VA and Vincent J. Valenti, Contract Manager with the Virginia Dept. of Transportation. The text was the same.
Mr. L.H. Brett Dear Mr. Brett, I wish to express my anger, disgust, and opposition to the proposed Route 288. I particularly wish to make it known that I oppose any route that would take this monument to man’s stupidity through my neighborhood. I live in Walton Park. When I moved here, seven years ago, this was a quaint and quiet community. It’s appeal was it’s seclusion from and accessibility to Richmond and the corporate work-place therein. In the past seven years we have become surrounded by, what some people refer to as, progress. I prefer to think of it as unrestrained, unthinking idiocy. Our quiet community has turned into just another overdeveloped, noisy, absurb example of man’s inability to use common-sense. Others can argue over the need for this highway. I would say to those who feel it will speed their daily trip to work, get up a little earlier. If we allow this sort of thing to continue, in the name of progress and convenience, what will be next? An off ramp in every front yard? How about bringing the shopping centers to every back-yard? A restaurant in every driveway. Where will it end/ It may be too late for some parts of Chesterfield County, but let’s stop this madness before it spreads. There is a cancer eating away at our beautiful county. A cancer called progress. If we must have progress and in some ways we must, why not use a little common-sense? A little discretion and restraint. Let’s not get so carried away with the idea of convenience that we forget what it is that makes Chesterfield County so appealing, and it isn’t highways and shopping centers! In closing just let me say that I would hope that the powers that be will listen to the little peons like myself. We may not have enough money to influence you or enough political clout to make a difference, but we are citizens of this county and we do matter. Please do all you can to stop this atrocity. I assure you that you will have the thanks of thousands of Chesterfield County residents. Sincerely, Floyd C. Bayne
