Floyd's Opinion
School StandardsThis letter was written on March 28, 1995.
William C. Bosher, Jr. Dear Mr. Bosher, I trust this letter finds you well. I write regarding a matter of great import to me. As a parent of two children, one in kindergarten the other two years old, I am concerned about the academic standards our schools are having set for them. I am a strong believer in setting high standards of excellence so that even those who fail to attain the highest level, do in fact reach higher than would otherwise have been the case. Dumbing down standards to make the underachievers feel better about themselves helps no one, PERIOD! Of particular interest are the standards for American history. These concern me the most because of the propensity of school boards, teacher’s unions, et. al; to politicize American history. Can you say POLITICALLY CORRECT!? I will be unable to attend the public hearing set forth for March 30, so it is my desire to make you aware of my concerns through this missive. It is important to remember that history is history. It is what happened, not what some disenchanted, angry liberal wishes had happened. American history should be taught with an eye toward accuracy. Teach it with all it’s blemishes and beauty marks. I would be happy to speak with you at greater length if you desire. Please do not hesitate to contact me if need be. I will close now, asking that you know me to be, educationally yours, Floyd C. Bayne
