A Pay Raise for Congress!?September 7, 2003 The Honorable Eric I. Cantor U.S. House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515-0001 Dear Congressman Cantor, I trust this missive finds you well. I am writing to you regarding a recent article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. This article refers to the vote on Thursday September 4 in which our august House of Representatives gave themselves another pay-raise. I must tell you that I was more than a little disappointed to see that yours was among the votes in favor of this raise (unless the facts were misstated in the article). It is my contention that as "citizen legislators" congress is already paid more than they are worthy of. The pejorative "professional politician" seems a more accurate description. I had hoped that you would set a better example for your contemporaries in congress by voting against this raise. It continues to befuddle me how those who would constantly complain about "not being able to afford tax cuts" for the citizenry can always manage to find money enough for themselves. With all the other stipends that our elected representatives receive for their "service" I believe that yet another pay-raise is the height of chutzpah. I can only hope that you give no further reasons to be disappointed, as I will indeed use my vote to show my displeasure. I will close now by asking you to know that I am, Yours for liberty, Floyd C.
