Floyd's Opinion

This letter was sent as an e-mail to a candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates. Jack Rollison made his anti-gun sentiments well known throughout his campaign.

Mr. Rollison:

Regarding your recent mischaracterization of VCDL, GOA, and concealed carry permit holders I wish to comment.

I would first like for you to know that while I do not live in your district, if you harbor any broader political aspirations you may rest assured that you will not get my vote without a serious change in your attitude toward gun owners.

Ignorance is a lack of knowledge on a particular subject. Stupidity is the inability to process information. Maliciousness is a willingness to overlook and mischaracterize information with which you disagree. I am confident that the "ignorance factor" does not apply in your case. Therefore I can only assume that one of, or both of, the latter two points are true.

As a CCP holder for over twenty years I have had to undergo a police background check and prove my worthiness to the courts of this Commonwealth. I have committed no crimes of any kind with the gun I am licensed to carry. I know of no other CCP holders who have committed any crimes with their weapons. In fact, you know as well as I that were a CCP holder to do so it would be front page news for weeks.

You also seem to overlook the fact that a gun may be carried into a restaurant when in "open carry". Is a person openly carrying less likely to get drunk and shoot up the place, or does that only apply to CCP holders? You should know that I have experienced poor service and bad food in numerous Virginia restaurants. I have not, to this very day, shot anyone as a result. Nor do I plan to. You see, being a responsible, mature citizen (which qualified me as a CCP holder in the eyes of the court) I respect the law and abide by it. I think you will find that "extremists" don't place such a premium on obeying the laws.

I can only hope that you will come to understand the grevious wrong you have done to the VCDL, GOA, and all CCP holders with your words. A mature, respectable statesman would immediately offer his sincere, and very public, apology. I trust that it will be forthcoming.
